The Bennington Board of Education met on Monday, June 13th, 2022 for their regular meeting as well as their bi-annual workshop to review current and future topics in the District.

Topics during the summer workshop portion of the meeting included Bullying, Potential Bond Levy Costs, and Possible Facility Projects. Principals from elementary, middle, and high schools presented how allegations of bullying are handled and how behavior incidents are reported within the student information system.

The District’s Financial Advisor, Piper Sandler, shared possible future bond scenarios. The different scenarios are estimations based on the growth of housing and land valuation within the district and the possible amount of money needed for building future facilities. The scenarios ranged from a zero to ten-cents increase in the bond levy. The amount is dependent on the future facilities planned for construction.

The next section of the workshop began with Dr. Haack sharing current enrollment within the district and the estimated growth of the student population within the district over the next four years. Dr. Haack reported that even if no additional students move into the district, the elementary schools and high school will be over capacity by the 2026-2027 school year. The Board had asked for a list of potential facility needs and this list was shared with the Board from a new high school to another elementary school and repairs and expansion on current facilities with estimated costs for these projects.

The next steps in the planning process include purchasing land for future schools, which have been budgeted for from prior bond issues. Other steps will include surveying the community through phone surveys and community forums to determine what the community sees as future needs for students in the District.  Work and research will continue throughout the summer so the Board of Education can decide by September 1st for the community to vote on a Bond issue in November of 2022.
